Sports News: Gara Gombe Takes On Mary Onyali Over Special Adviser Appointment

Former Chairman Gombe Football Association, Ahmed Gara Gombe has faulted the choice of Nigerian former sprinter, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi as Special Adviser on sports to the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, saying her appointment would do more damage that good for the image of the country.

The former Nigeria Football Federation board member said it is not a good image for Nigeria to have Onyali-Omagbemi, who tested positive to a banned substance known as Ephedrine and was banned from all sports related activities locally and internationally till date.

“Onyali-Omagbemi choice by the honourable Ministry as Special Adviser has done more damage to the image of Nigeria in the Sport world.

“Today Nigeria is an object of ridicule in the eyes of Africa and the whole world that a drug cheat whose infamous name is still hanging on world map of drug cheats inventory is our Sports Ministers Adviser,” Gombe fumed.

Speaking further, Gombe said Onyali-Omagbemi integrity is seriously in doubt because of her role in the ill-fated Olympic Sports Fund which did not see the light of the day.

“Onyali-Omagbemi role with late Jide Fashefun in the Olympic Sports Fund is nothing to write home about because of the way she was handled it.

“Chief Afe Babalola gave the heaviest donation of N20 million to the fund but up till today, nobody knows how much was donated and by who and again Onyali-Omagbemi claimed to have shared the money to some athletes. Who are they?.

“She should be ask to publish the list of donors, beneficiaries and amount, the bank account and the signatories to clear herself of the fraud associated with the so called Sports Fund,” Gombe said.
