Vagid Musaev, alias Vladimir Nabiyev, the third accused in the case of alleged kidnapping of two of their fellow Russians nationals who was reportedly arrested on Saturday appeared in court on Wednesday alongside the first accused, Musah Musaev and the second accused, Rhezahan Sultanov.
He was jointly charged with the first and second accused with conspiracy to commit crime and kidnapping..
Restating the facts of the case again, DSP Nanegbe, said, the accused allegedly kidnapped the two victims at East Legon on August 8, last year and kept them until April 2018.
The prosecution stated that the accused allegedly kidnapped Mr. Ramazan Kafaroff at Adgiringano, East Legon, on his way home after office hours on August 8, and also later kidnapped his brother Arsan Kafarov last year and kept them until April 2018.
The Prosecution said the accused and their accomplices kept the victims at different locations, subjected them to severe beatings which resulted in injuries. The accused and their accomplices, however, demanded $18 million to release the victims.
On October 31, last year while the victims were in the custody of the alleged kidnappers, Ramazan, one of the victims, was compelled to execute a Power of Attorney to one Adam Edelberg to dispose of all his property comprising his business, six luxurious vehicles and a jewelry shop. Based upon this, the accused also started selling the rice imported by Kafaroff Agro while Ramazan Kafarov and his brother were held in captivity.
The Prosecution said on April 20, this year the two victims managed to escape and sought refuge at the Russian Embassy. They later lodged complaint with the Police.
On July 17, this year, the police, through intelligence, lured the accused persons and arrested them, the Prosecution added.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mawunyo Nanegbe, opposed to bail, noted that the accused was arrested only last Saturday and that investigations was still ongoing .The court, presided over by Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku asked DSP Nanegbe if they still needed the accused who has already been charged and his response was in the affirmative.
He further noted that, the third accused was also the king pin and masterminded the kidnapping since he claims Ramazan Kafarov owes him. Thus, the accused be remanded in custody as he could interfere with police investigations if granted bail.
Ralph Poku Edusei, represented all three accused persons, and prayed the court to admit Vagid Musaev to bail based upon a claim that he wasn’t in sound health condition but without any medical evidence to back it. He also said that , the facts do not support the charges and the story was inconsistent. Therefore, the case was bailable and the accused have people of substance who would stand as sureties for him.
Even though it wasn’t yet time to go into the facts ,Mr.Edusei, stated that there is evidence that, the victim voluntarily voted at the embassy during the Russian elections which coincided with the time they were said to have been kidnapped and wondered how kidnapped people could come to vote at the embassy.
He further alleged that Ramazan Kaffarov is being wanted by Interpol and would be arrested as soon as he was to leave the embassy adding that he had a record of police cases.
The court, granted the third accused to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with four sureties to be justified exactly as was earlier accorded the first and second accused. The court further ordered him to deposit his passport with the court’s registry.
The case was adjourned until 27th September, 2018.
